Waveform Scale

video-wave-scale

The video-wave-scale parameter controls how audio amplitude values are mathematically scaled before being drawn. Different scale functions produce distinct visual characters — some are more suited to music, others to speech or podcasts. The default is sqrt.

Available scale modes:

  • sqrt — Square root scaling. Compresses loud peaks while keeping quiet sounds visible. Good for general-purpose use. This is the default.
  • cbrt — Cube root scaling. More aggressive compression than sqrt, producing a flatter, more uniform waveform.
  • log — Logarithmic scaling. Maximizes visibility of quiet signals, similar to how human hearing perceives loudness.
  • lin — Linear scaling. No compression; amplitude is drawn proportionally. Can result in clipped-looking waveforms for dynamic audio.
