Append Image

append

The append parameter places a second image beside the base image and grows the canvas to hold it. The base image is not covered or resized — the output simply gets bigger.

The image is given as a path or a URL, resolved the same way a mark is. append64 is the Base64 variant.

Sizing the Appended Image

The appended image is drawn at its native size, multiplied by dpr. It is not scaled to match the base image.

To resize it, give a fully percent-encoded absolute URL with its own parameters, so that the ? and & belong to the appended image rather than to the outer request:

append=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.imgix.net%2Fbadge.png%3Fh%3D200

A relative path with an encoded query — append=/badge.png%3Fh%3D200 — does not resize: the query is dropped and the image is drawn at its native size. Use the absolute form.

append-preserve is the other way to constrain it: it keeps the base image’s height or width and clips the appended image instead.

Controlling the Layout

ParameterWhat it controls
append-sideWhich edge the image is placed against
append-alignHow it lines up along that edge
append-preserveWhether the base image’s size is kept
append-gapThe space between the two images

Filling and Order

The gap, and any area the appended image does not cover, takes the pad fill first and then bg. With neither set the area is transparent — or white on JPEG, which has no transparency.

mask, border, mark, txt and the drop shadow all apply to the finished composite rather than to the base image alone. So mark-align=bottom,right lands in the corner of the combined canvas, not the corner of the original picture.

An appended image that cannot be fetched fails the whole request with the origin’s own status, so a missing file returns 404. A file that is not an image returns 422.
