Video VFX Halation
video-vfx-halation
Adds a warm orange bleed along high-contrast silhouette edges — the 35mm film look.
video-vfx-halation accepts an integer from 0 to 100. 0 is off (default). Higher values produce a stronger orange rim on bright edges. Out-of-range or non-numeric values are coerced to 0 rather than rejected.
| Value | Effect |
|---|---|
0 | Off (default) |
25 – 45 | Subtle warm rim on silhouette edges |
70 – 100 | Strong celluloid bleed |
Halation is an edge effect, not an all-highlights glow. It clings to high-contrast silhouette edges (a bright sky behind a dark subject) and fades into the dark side, while leaving the bright region itself unblown and midtone texture (foliage, skin) neutral. The bleed is always warm orange — that is the characteristic of real 35mm halation.
For an all-highlights glow, use video-vfx-bloom instead. Stack both for a fully cinematic film look.
The compose order is chromatic aberration → film grain → bloom → halation → vignette.
