Video VFX Film Grain
video-vfx-film-grain
Overlays analog film-grain texture on the video — luminance-weighted, clumped, and re-seeded every frame.
video-vfx-film-grain accepts an integer from 0 to 100. 0 is off (default). Higher values produce coarser, heavier grain. Out-of-range or non-numeric values are coerced to 0 rather than rejected.
| Value | Effect |
|---|---|
0 | Off (default) |
20 – 40 | Subtle filmic tooth; clean digital frame with texture |
60 – 80 | Overt grain; 16mm or music-video look |
100 | Maximum grain |
This is not flat digital noise. The grain is:
- Luminance-weighted — heaviest in shadows and midtones, much lighter in highlights, so blown skies and light sources stay clean.
- Clumped — has a grain size rather than per-pixel static, which reads as real film stock.
- Re-seeded every frame — shimmers like real film rather than being a static texture burned on.
Film grain at small output sizes. Grain size is absolute, so small outputs (tiny spritesheet thumbnails) show coarser grain relative to the frame. For fine, filmic grain, apply it at the resolution you actually deliver.
Frame interpolation. On interpolated or duplicated frames the grain is blended from neighboring frames rather than freshly generated, so it can look slightly softer there. For maximally crisp grain, avoid combining with frame-rate conversion.
