Drop Shadow Type
drop-shadow-type
The drop-shadow-type parameter chooses which kind of shadow drop-shadow draws. It defaults to flat.
| Value | Shadow | Reads |
|---|---|---|
flat (default) | A soft shadow offset from the subject, like CSS drop-shadow() | -x, -y, -spread, -color |
cast | A realistic shadow thrown onto the floor by a light | -pose, -azimuth, -elevation, -softness, -falloff, -mode, -color |
float | A soft oval pool under a hovering subject | -y as the hover gap, -color |
inset | A shadow inside the image, for a pressed-in look or a glow | -x, -y, -spread, -color |
An unknown word falls back to flat and is left out of the X-Imgix-Params response header.
Each type reads only the parameters listed above and ignores the others, which are then also missing from X-Imgix-Params. That is correct behavior rather than a dropped parameter.
cast is the one to reach for in product photography: it reads the subject’s shape and the camera angle to throw the shadow along the floor, rather than simply offsetting a copy of the silhouette. inset with a bright drop-shadow-color is how you make a glow.
Only flat, float and cast grow the canvas. inset draws entirely within the existing bounds.
